Our Dentists

Mario Sertic, BSc, DMD

General Dentist

Dr. Mario completed his dental degree at the University of British Columbia in 1999, and he also holds degrees in Biology and Pharmaceutical Sciences. After three years practicing in Vancouver, he returned to Vancouver Island in 2002 to practice dentistry near his hometown of Parksville.

Dr. Mario wanted to be a dentist ever since he was young, but please don’t hold that against him! Patients enjoy his great sense of humour and easy chairside manner. He belongs to the Nanaimo Spear Study Club.

Outside of work, his passions are soccer, tennis, many outdoor pursuits, travel, and spending time with his wife, son, and daughter. He also volunteers time coaching in the Harbour City Football Club.

Both Dr. Sertic and Dr. Simmons are active members of the community and are engaged in a variety of professional associations. They are active members of the Canadian Dental Association, the Association of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia, the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia, and the Nanaimo and District Dental Society. They are also happy to support the University of British Columbia Dental Program and Alumni Initiatives, and several other community-directed programs such as the Save-A-Smile Campaign, providing assistance and dental treatment to members of the community in need, and provide annual bursaries locally at Vancouver Island University and Nanaimo and District Secondary School.
Renate Simmons, DMD

General Dentist

Dr. Simmons completed her dental degree at the University of British Columbia in 1999 after studying General and Pharmaceutical Sciences. She originally hails from the sunny Okanagan Valley and practiced dentistry in Vancouver for several years after graduation.

She moved to Vancouver Island in 2002, and has enjoyed every minute of the beautiful Island lifestyle ever since! Dr. Simmons has a particular interest in cosmetic dental services and facial esthetics. She is a Certified Invisalign® Provider who annually achieves Preferred Provider Status, and has completed full training in Botox® injections and has been administering them since 2008.

She regularly volunteers time to the Vancouver Island University Dental Programs as a Clinical Instructor. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Simmons enjoys yoga, tennis, hiking, and spending time with her husband, son, and daughter.

Dr. Robert Smith, DMD

General Dentist

Dr. Robert Smith is a graduate of the University of British Columbia, where he received a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 1998. For most of his career, he practiced dentistry in northern Canada, where he gained valuable experience in all areas of dentistry.

Dr. Smith believes in working closely with patients to help them achieve optimal oral health through preventative care and patient education. He is committed to providing a comfortable and relaxed dental atmosphere, and he takes a caring and gentle approach when interacting with patients.

His professional interests include root canal therapy, oral surgery, adolescent dental care, and aesthetic dentistry. He always strives to make every patient proud of their smile.
